Why aren’t the media questioning the GST fairy tales and fiction spread by political leaders from the eastern states?
Fairy Tale One
The Adelaide Advertiser SA reported that South Australia will get an extra $360 million in GST revenue and quoted the Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison saying “it was up to the states to come to an agreement on any future changes to GST distribution”. This statement is a fairy tale. It only takes a simple majority from both houses of parliament to change the GST.
Fairy Tale Two
The Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison also said that the GST carve up “is decision of the Commonwealth Grants Commission, in the same way it is being done every year, ever since the GST was introduced. All the money from the GST goes to the states, none of it comes to the Commonwealth. It’s distributed on a basis of a formula which is set by the Commonwealth Grants Commission“. However Gareth Parker challenged him that he is responsible for determining each states share, but did not hold him to account on further GST distributions for WA. The fact is the Treasurer is responsible for determining each state’s share of the GST. Scott Morrison should be held to account.
Fairy Tale Three
WA can’t raise and collect the GST itself, it’s against sect 109 of the Constitution. This is a fairy tale which has been promoted by the media and their followers. WA raises and collects Land Tax and the MRIT so it can raise a GST.
Fairy Tale Four
Changing the GST will disadvantage other states. Another fairy tale. The HFE disadvantages WA by excluding gambling taxes in the other states, forcing WA to dig up minerals and farm every inch of arable land. In terms of land mass and infrastructure, WA gets one allocation while the Eastern States receive five allocations for their collective land mass (Qld, NSW, ACT, Vic, SA)
Fairy Tale Five
WA has been a net beneficiary of Grants in the past. Another fairy tale. From 1910 to 1942 WA received a total of $21,940,000. In 1943 NSW received their first lump sum grant of $30,052,000 exceeding the total payments received by WA in previous years. NSW, Vic and Qld have exceeded WA in dollars received ever since.
Our Party is the only party challenging the GST fairy tales and fiction, but we need the media’s help too. It’s time to cancel the 1999 Agreement with the Commonwealth and collect our GST in Western Australia. It’s our GST, not welfare for other states to protect their marginal seats.
